Planting Directions
Here’s 7 easy steps to grow wildflowers.
- 01 Find a good location to plant
Find a spot with good sun and good drainage. It is recommended to find a spot that gets at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day, but more sun is better.
- 02 Determine the best wildflower(s) to plant
All Seedles do not contain neonicotinoids, are GMO-free and are native to that region.
- 03 Determine the best time to plant
Generally, the best times to plant wildflower seeds are just after the final winter frost (early spring) or in the late fall at least 10 weeks before the first frost. In nature, many wildflower seeds drop in the fall months before the rain and then wildflower seeds remain dormant until they are sufficiently watered and outside temperatures have warmed enough for germination.
- 04 Prepare the soil for planting
After the optimum site is decided upon, it is essential to remove grass and weeds to give the wildflower seeds the best chance of sprouting. Depending on the size, this can be done with a garden hoe, shovel and rake, or with heavy machinery such as a roto-tiller for larger areas. Additionally, it is best for the soil to be loosened to give the seedlings the best chance to thrive.
- 05 Plant the seeds with proper spacing
The optimum spacing is going to depend on the mixture that is planted and the type of coverage you are desiring. Space seeds according to the directions on the packaging. For Seedles, each seedball can cover up to 1 square foot of space, but for a denser patch, place 3-4 Seedles per square foot.
Depending on size of the area, planting can be done by hand or by a seeder for larger jobs. To plant, place seed balls on the top of the soil and gently compress them into the soil using a roller or walking over the area. Planting Seedles is incredibly easy and they just need to be pushed halfway into prepared soil, so the top half is out of the soil, but the bottom half is nicely nestled into its fertile surroundings.
- 06 Keep area watered well so wildflowers grow
Proper amounts of water is essential for wildflower seeds to germinate. Seeds should be watered daily and soil should remain moist until the emerging seedlings are 4 to 6 inches tall. After that, watering can be done once or twice a week.
- 07 Enjoy your wildflowers!
It’s easier than you think!

How Much Seed Do I Need?
1. Measure
For Squares or Rectangles: measure the length and width of the space where you want to plant.
For Circles: find the radius - measure the widest part of your planting space and divide by 2.
2. Calculate Square Footage
For Squares or Rectangles: length (in feet) x width (in feet) = square feet
For example, a garden that measures 50 feet x 30 feet = 1500 sq. ft.
For Circles: radius (in feet) x radius x 3.14 = square feet
For example, a circular garden that is 20 feet across has a radius of 10 feet. 10 x 10 x 3.14 = 314 sq. ft.
(The mathematical formula for the area of a circle is Π · r2 - the Π symbol is pronounced Pi and represents approximately 3.142, and r2 stands for radius squared.)
3. Find How Much Seed You Need
The amount of seed you should plant depends on the flower display you want. We typically recommend planting on the higher side for a lush meadow. Plant on the lower side for a more scattered look.
For Individual Species: The recommended rates vary greatly from species to species. Check the product page, or contact us with questions.
For Wildflower Mixes: Reference the table below.
This Much Seed Covers... | This Much Square Footage |
---|---|
1/4 lb | 250 - 500 sq. ft. |
1/2 lb | 500 - 1,000 sq. ft. |
1 lb | 1,000 - 2,000 sq. ft. |
5 lbs | 5,000 - 10,000 sq. ft. |
10 lbs | 10,000 - 25,000 sq. ft. |
- 1 Acre = 43,000 sq.ft.
- 1/2 Acre = 21,500 sq. ft.
- 1/4 Acre = 10,750 sq.ft.
- 1/10 Acre = 4,300 sq. ft.
Tips For Larger Plantings: If you have a large site, from 1/2 acre to several acres, your planting rate may be affected by land conditions. If you have heavy weeds on the site now, some erosion, generally poor soil, or other land problems, additional seed is usually the most economical solution, since installation of a large planting usually costs more than the seed itself. If your site does have these problems and you want full coverage, use 1 pound per 1000 sq. ft.
