🍅Dwarf tomatoes can be used to create a variety of delicious dishes, such as salads, pasta, pizza, soups, and sauces. They're perfect for raw dishes because they have a sweet and flavorful taste without being too acidic.

Plant Specifications

Tomatoes will thrive in an area of full sunlight with temperatures of at least 60F or higher. They prefer a rich soil, that is filled with organic matter. Make sure that the sowing medium is also well drained, as this is very important for a healthy root structure. Adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil, can increase drainage. Water daily with a light moisture setting to avoid drowning the seedlings.

Your tomato seeds will begin to germinate in roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants themselves will grow to a mature height of up to 4 feet tall and can grow up to 3 feet wide. Tomato plants will need a fair amount of area to grow and can be spaced about 36 inches apart from one another, in rows spaced 36 inches apart. Stakes & supports are crucial to growing tomato plants, since the fruits are very heavy.

Planting Directions

01. When to Plant Aster Seeds

02. Where to Plant Tomato Seeds

To determine where to plant tomato seeds, note the mature size of the plant. In general, determinate plants tend to be smaller than indeterminate ones. We also offer smaller plants for containers like Tiny Tim or Early Girl.

When the seedlings are two to three inches tall and have a couple sets of true leaves, it's time to transplant to your garden or pot them in larger containers. Plant them deeper than they were in their pots, so new roots will form along the buried stem. You can plant them all the way up to the top couple sets of leaves. This is especially ideal if your plants have gotten too tall indoors, and you want them to become stockier and stronger.

Generally, space your tomato seedlings two to three feet apart, in an area that receives full sun all day and has well-draining soil. A drip system is the best way to deliver steady, consistent water to the soil that will avoid wetting the leaves and plants.

03. How to Plant Tomato Seeds

It's often more efficient to dampen the potting mix before you put it in the containers. Add some water, and work it through the soil. Keep adding water until the mix stays compressed in your hand but is not dripping wet. It should break apart when you poke it with your finger. Then, fill your containers with potting soil. Gently firm the soil, so it's about an inch from the top.

Place two to three seeds per container, then sprinkle soil on top. Keep the soil moist but not soaked. Once plants start forming, more water can be applied. Keep them in an area that allows for plenty of sunlight and rotate them regularly.

When it is time to transplant outside, add stakes or tomato cages before you think you need them so each plant can grow upright with support as they need it. It is very difficult to fit a mature tomato plant into a cage without breaking multiple branches.

Large Cherry Tomatoes

Tomato plants in general grow to a mature height of anywhere from 36 to 48 inches tall. They are categorized as annuals, meaning the plants will grow quickly from seed, produce beefsteak like tomatoes through the summer months and later die with the first killing frost. Large Red Cherry Tomatoes are perfect for slicing in half, eating as a snack with a bit of salt, or adding to a fresh garden salad.

How Much Seed Do I Need?

1. Measure

For Squares or Rectangles: measure the length and width of the space where you want to plant.

For Circles: find the radius - measure the widest part of your planting space and divide by 2.

2. Calculate Square Footage

Square Foot Calculations

For Squares or Rectangles:  length (in feet)  x  width (in feet) = square feet

For example, a garden that measures 50 feet x 30 feet = 1500 sq. ft.

For Circles:   radius (in feet) x  radius  x 3.14 = square feet

For example, a circular garden that is 20 feet across has a radius of 10 feet. 10 x 10 x 3.14 = 314 sq. ft.

(The mathematical formula for the area of a circle is Π · r2 - the Π symbol is pronounced Pi and represents approximately 3.142, and r2 stands for radius squared.)

3. Find How Much Seed You Need

The amount of seed you should plant depends on the flower display you want. We typically recommend planting on the higher side for a lush meadow. Plant on the lower side for a more scattered look.

For Individual Species: The recommended rates vary greatly from species to species. Check the product page, or contact us with questions.

For Wildflower Mixes: Reference the table below.

This Much Seed Covers... This Much Square Footage
1/4 lb 250 - 500 sq. ft.
1/2 lb 500 - 1,000 sq. ft.
1 lb 1,000 - 2,000 sq. ft.
5 lbs 5,000 - 10,000 sq. ft.
10 lbs 10,000 - 25,000 sq. ft.
Acreage
  • 1 Acre = 43,000 sq.ft.
  • 1/2 Acre = 21,500 sq. ft.
  • 1/4 Acre = 10,750 sq.ft.
  • 1/10 Acre = 4,300 sq. ft.

Tips For Larger Plantings: If you have a large site, from 1/2 acre to several acres, your planting rate may be affected by land conditions. If you have heavy weeds on the site now, some erosion, generally poor soil, or other land problems, additional seed is usually the most economical solution, since installation of a large planting usually costs more than the seed itself. If your site does have these problems and you want full coverage, use 1 pound per 1000 sq. ft.
