🌽 Also called Indian corn or maize, corn originated in the Americas over 10,000 years ago and is now one of the most widely distributed crops in the world. Used as livestock feed, human food, oil, and biofuel, corn is extremely versatile and has become one of the world’s most dominant crops. We love to grow it in our summer gardens, as that first bite into a juicy, sweet ear of corn is a harbinger of summertime. Growing your own fresh corn is unlike any subpar offering you can purchase in the store, and we love it fresh, frozen, ground, and popped!

GROWING CONDITIONS

Corn is a sun loving crop that prefers warmer temperatures of 65F or higher. The plants are picky when it comes to soil conditions, and will grow best in a medium that is nitrogen rich and loamy. You will also need to make sure that the sowing area is well drained. To improve drainage, we always recommend adding a light compost to any areas containing hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily until germination.

Corn isn’t fond of being transplanted, so it is best sown directly in the garden, when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Begin by tilling the sowing area, removing all unwanted plant life and weeds. Sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2” to 1” under topsoil. Check below for spacing.

Planting Directions

Learn to Grow Black Aztec Corn

Vigorous 6' plants produce 8" ears. Kernels will turn jet black when mature. Makes an excellent blue cornmeal. 70-90 days.

Direct Seed: 4" Apart

Germination: 4-21 Days

Rows Apart: 36-48"

Light: Full Sun

Instructions - Sow seeds outdoors 1" deep after danger of frost has passed. For good pollination and full ears, plant in blocks of 3-6 rows instead of one long row. Thin seedlings to 8" apart. Corn is a heavy feeder and does best in well-drained fertile soil with plenty of water.

How to Care for Corn Plants -

Water plots well after planting and keep them consistently moist through germination and harvest. As the weather becomes warmer, increase watering. Sufficient moisture is crucial for plants to develop and produce properly. Corn should be fertilized with a nitrogen rich food when plants are about 12 to 18 inches high, and weeds should be controlled so they do not steal moisture and nutrients from your crop. Corn will produce a fairly shallow root system, so take care not to damage it when removing weeds. Weed control in corn plots is best achieved by a thick mulching, which also helps to maintain moisture.

If you have enough land planted with corn, your plants will pollinate by themselves with the help of passing wind. Keep in mind that each strand of silk MUST be pollinated by the pollen found in the tassels above the corn stalks in order for the kernels to mature. Most pollen shedding occurs after the morning dew has dried, around 9 to 11am.

If you only have a small corner with sweet corn, don’t expect self-pollination to happen. Between a small number of plants, pollen shed from the tassels may blow away before enough of its microscopic grains land on the corn silks. If there is not enough pollen from the tassels to spread around and touch the silks, the kernels will not develop. Therefore, it is most important to plant your corn in blocks, never in just one or two long rows.

If necessary, hand pollinate your corn by snapping the tassels (male part) of a few stalks and use them like feather dusters over the emerging silks (female part). Do this each day for a week, ensuring that you do not remove too many tassels before the week’s end.

Black Hopi (Organic)

The kernels have a higher protein content, and the protein is more complete than more common varieties of corn. The black color is caused by anthocyanins, which are a kind of antioxidant. It is high in amino acids, iron. They can be harvested young and eaten as a sweet corn, or grown to maturity, then dried and ground into flour.

Black corn flour has a slightly sweet flavor and is great for making tortillas and corn bread. It is also used in traditional Mexican cooking, making a thick, tortilla-like cake called tlacoyo. It can be used to make hominy, a drink called atole, soups, stews, and corncakes.

How Much Seed Do I Need?

1. Measure

For Squares or Rectangles: measure the length and width of the space where you want to plant.

For Circles: find the radius - measure the widest part of your planting space and divide by 2.

2. Calculate Square Footage

Square Foot Calculations

For Squares or Rectangles:  length (in feet)  x  width (in feet) = square feet

For example, a garden that measures 50 feet x 30 feet = 1500 sq. ft.

For Circles:   radius (in feet) x  radius  x 3.14 = square feet

For example, a circular garden that is 20 feet across has a radius of 10 feet. 10 x 10 x 3.14 = 314 sq. ft.

(The mathematical formula for the area of a circle is Π · r2 - the Π symbol is pronounced Pi and represents approximately 3.142, and r2 stands for radius squared.)

3. Find How Much Seed You Need

The amount of seed you should plant depends on the flower display you want. We typically recommend planting on the higher side for a lush meadow. Plant on the lower side for a more scattered look.

For Individual Species: The recommended rates vary greatly from species to species. Check the product page, or contact us with questions.

For Wildflower Mixes: Reference the table below.

This Much Seed Covers... This Much Square Footage
1/4 lb 250 - 500 sq. ft.
1/2 lb 500 - 1,000 sq. ft.
1 lb 1,000 - 2,000 sq. ft.
5 lbs 5,000 - 10,000 sq. ft.
10 lbs 10,000 - 25,000 sq. ft.
Acreage
  • 1 Acre = 43,000 sq.ft.
  • 1/2 Acre = 21,500 sq. ft.
  • 1/4 Acre = 10,750 sq.ft.
  • 1/10 Acre = 4,300 sq. ft.

Tips For Larger Plantings: If you have a large site, from 1/2 acre to several acres, your planting rate may be affected by land conditions. If you have heavy weeds on the site now, some erosion, generally poor soil, or other land problems, additional seed is usually the most economical solution, since installation of a large planting usually costs more than the seed itself. If your site does have these problems and you want full coverage, use 1 pound per 1000 sq. ft.
